City palace

The City Palace in Udaipur in the state of Rajasthan is one of the most imposing and impressive place and truly worth the visit. The royal building took more than 300 years to complete which construction was started during the time of Maharana Udai Singh II and is blended with Mughal and Rajasthani architectural styles.
The City Palace is considered as one of the best sightseeing destinations in Udaipur because of its exuberant structure blend with architectural style. The walk tells a bit about the history of the palace, its inhabitants, the elephant wars and other customs of the noble residents.


Jagmandir

Also known as Lake Garden Palace, Jag Mandir is been constructed on the island of Lake Pichola. The construction of this palace was started by the Maharana Amar Singh and was later carried on by Maharana Karan Singh and finished by Maharana Jagat Singh. Hence it got its name Jagat Mandir. Jagmandir serves as a summer palace to the royal family of Mewar, and at the same time, parties and royal wedding functions are organized.
The three-storey palace of Jag Mandir includes the following structures:

  • Gul Mahal, built for Prince Khurram and his family
  • The elegant facade flanked by four elephant statues on each side of the pier
  • The garden courtyard and the Darikhana on the north side
  • Bara Patharon ka Mahal (palace of 12 stones) on the east side
  • Kunwar Pada ka Mahal

Fateh Sagar Lake

The Fateh Sagar Lake is a second largest artificial lake, which took the name of the Maharana Fateh Singh of Udaipur and Mewar, built in the northwest of Udaipur and north of Lake Pichola in 1680.Inside the Fatah Sagar lake, there are three small islands: the largest is called Nehru Park and is a tourist attraction, the second houses a public park with a jet fountain and the third is the site of the solar Observatory of Udaipur (USO). Nehru Park is accessible by motor boats. The blue waters of the lake and the green background of the mountains gave Udaipur the nickname of second Kashmir. This is a peaceful place and one can have a boat ride here. The beautiful lake is surrounded by hills from all the three sides and offers a marvelous view. This is a place you must add to your list when you visit Udaipur.


Shilpgram Fair

Shilpgram is a craft fair and is organized once a year on the west side of the city of Udaipur. Its aim is to promote the art, craft, textile, and handicrafts of Rajasthan. You will find handicrafts, bandhej, tie and dye, mirror work and embroideries. Camel leather items, hand woven clothes and much more at this fair.
The festival is generally held in the period of the month of November or December and continues for 10 days. This fair encourages local designers, potters, and other artists. There are numerous workshops held for those who are fascinated in learning the art and craft of Rajasthan.
Tourism is the main source of income in Rajasthan and the government wishes to uplift the condition of the countryside areas of the state.


Jagdish Temple

The Jagdish Temple is located at the center of Udaipur. In the past, it was called the temple of Jagannath Rai but today it is called Jagdish-Ji. It is one of the major monuments of Udaipur.
The temple stands on an elevated terrace and was built by Maharana Jagat Singh in 1651. It has a double-storey mandap (prayer hall) and a two-story saandhara (with a porch). The mandapa has another plan hidden within its pyramidal samavarna, while the hollow spire above the sanctuary contains two other non-functional floors.
All roads coming from sheharpanah (city walls) converge on the Jagdish Temple are built by order of Maharana Jagat Singh. The temple is a remarkable example of Māha Māru or the Māru-Gurjara architecture, decorated with bas-reliefs and sculptures. It is located at a short distance from the City Palace complex. The main shrine is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and can be reached by climbing 32 marble steps and it is encircled by minor shrines of Lord Ganesha, Sun God, Goddess Shakti and Lord Shiva respectively.


Saas Bahu Temple

The eccentric name of this temple is, in reality, a corruption of the original name- Sahastra Bahu temples, meaning Lord with one with thousand arms. These temples are dedicated to Lord Vishnu and belong to the 10th Century. Although the temples are almost ruined now, the architecture of the olden days still shines through, revealing the delicate, detailed artistry that went into creating them. The Sahastra Bahu temple is located near Eklingji Temple so visitors can make a combined visit to the temples.


Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary

Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary is a much-loved destination for tourists who like to enjoy the sights of the best places in Udaipur. Very rare species of wild animals can be seen here such as sambars, wild boars, chitals, hyenas, jackals, panthers, hares and blue bulls. At the backside of the sanctuary, you can see the Bansadra hill that will let your mood get replenished. There are the Bari Lake and Jiyan Lake that supports the ecosystem present inside the sanctuary. It is home to another kind of animals such as panthers, hyenas, and jackals.


Eklingji Temple

Eklingji (sometimes referred to as Kailashpuri = “city of Kailash”) is one of the architectural sights in Udaipur. The name of the place means “a lingam” which indicates that the main sanctuary is dedicated to the god Shiva. The temple is full of figurines of Shiva along with figurines of Parvati, Saraswati, Ganesh, Kartik, and Nandi.
The city has a complex of 108 marble temples surrounded by walls and terraces for water, the first of which was built around 728 or 734 by Bappa Rawal, the legendary founder of the Sisodia Clan of the Rajputs. The main temple of the 8th century was rebuilt in the 15th century by Acharya Viswaroopa contemporary of Adi Sankaracharya and linked to the Sharada Math of Dwaraka also founded by Adi Sankaracharya.

Haldighati

If you are a dramatist or a historian, this place deserves a visit. Haldighati is a mountain pass in the Aravalli Range which connects Rajsamand and Pali districts. It gets its eminence for the battle of Haldighati that took place between Rana Pratap Singh of Mewar and Raja Man Singh of Amber in 1576.
Maharana Pratap’s horse Chetak played an important role in the Battle of Haldighati. He was critically wounded in this battle and died on 21 June 1576. The statue honoring his death was put up by Maharana Pratap and still exists at Haldighati.
Haldighati got this name because of the yellow color sand which looks like turmeric (Haldi). The place is also famous for its rose products like rose water and Gulkand which is having amazing medicinal properties.


Lake Pichola

Lake Pichola is one of the most important places to visit in Udaipur which has great part of the Havelis and palaces of the city, the artificial lake created to irrigate the plantations of the city has 4 artificial islands, some ghats (stairs) where the local baths and small photogenic bridges that connect the two sides of the city. It is worth taking a walk near the center of the city to take some very special photos of the palace.
One of the main tourist attractions of Udaipur are the motorboat trips by the lake, the more traditional of them leave from the Rameshwar Ghat which is inside the City Palace.
