Nestled comfortably in the hills of the Western Ghats, Wayanad is a picturesque hill station in Kerala. The wetland gets its name from two local words, “Vayal”, which means rice field and “Naad” “which means” land that is, the land of rice fields.
At the top of the Western Ghats, this popular destination is the only district in Kerala that shares its border with Karnataka and Kerala. It is also the least populated district in the State. This exquisite mountain station is home to many attractions.
About what to visit in Wayanad includes the ancient ruins, mysterious caves, the exotic desert and adventure jungle trails. All these exquisite treasures have become even more attractive with the folklore that surrounds them.
Wayanad tourist sites are in abundance, and Chembra Peak is the highest peak in Wayanad making it a perfect trekking destination, surrounded by lush tea plantations. An important fact to note here is that you need permission from the Forestry Office in Meppadi if you want to go to the top.
A heart-shaped lake called Hridayasarasile near the top serves as the perfect point of view. It is said that this lake has never dried up. It offers great views of the entire district and the hills outside Wayanad.
They are two natural caves in the remote location of Edakkal, in Wayanad. It is 1,200 meters above sea level on the Ambukutty Mala mountain. Archaeologists and historians of the world have been constantly attracted to the prehistoric carvings dating back 8000 years that are found on the walls of these caves. This is a difficult hike through the rugged rocky mountains and one of the few tourist spots in Wayanad that is not suitable for children and elderly people.
The Meenmutty waterfalls are another place to visit in Wayanad, sprouting through the lush vegetation of Wayanad is the view that awaits you in the Neelimala. This is another great place to go trekking with the well-cared coffee plantations on either side of the trail, the ginger patches, and areca nut plantations later on. The word Meenmutty, in Malabar, means the place where fish are blocked, and it is considered as the largest waterfall in Wayanad. Comfortable in its natural environment, the Meenmutty waterfalls are the second largest in Kerala.
The Wildlife Sanctuary is located 18 km east of Sultan Bathery. It actually extends into two regions of Kerala – Cannanore in the north and Calicut in the south. An intrinsic part of the Nilgiri Biosphere, Wayanad the Wildlife Sanctuary joins two other wildlife parks – Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka in the northeast and Mudumalai of Tamil Nadu in the southeast.
The sanctuary was formed in 1973 and has been presented in the framework of the Project of elephants in the year 1991-92. Occupying an area of 345 square kilometers, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary becomes the second largest in the state of Kerala. The sanctuary is separated into two disconnected parts known as the Wayanad High Way Wildlife Sanctuary (Tholpetty) in the north and the Wayanad Low Way Wildlife Sanctuary (Muthanga) in the south. The area between the two parts was originally a forest region, although it is now occupied by majorly plantations.
The term Wayanad literally means ‘land of the swamps’. A visit to the Sanctuary of the tourists offers an opportunity to witness the efforts made by the management for the conservation of the park’s biological reserve. The scenic beauty and variety of flora and fauna also keep visitors busy and entertained.
Flora – The undulating landscape of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is covered with teak damp deciduous forests and semi-evergreen pastures. The floral variety of the park range from teak, bamboo, Maruthu, Karimarithi, Rosewood, Venteak, Vengal, Chadachi, Mazukanjirarn (deciduous type) to Vateria indica, Lagerstroemia, Lanceolta, Terminalia paniculata (semi-perennial type).
Animals – Among the animals, the elephant occupies the prominent position although there is a decent number of the Tigers in the park as well. Other wild animals that can be included here include Panthers, Jungle Cats, civet cats, monkeys, wild dogs, bison, deer, and bears.
Reptiles – The reptile population is also good fairy with a number of species sighted snakes here. Lizards are quite common in this park.
Birds – Peacock, Babblers, Cuckoos, Owl, Carpenter and Jungle Bird are some of the many birds that are seen flying in the park. It is a pleasure to see how these birds do their usual tasks of collecting food for their young and themselves.
Enjoy Jeep Safaris – Tourists can explore the flora and fauna of the sanctuary aboard a jeep. This is an excellent option (and the only one) to remain safe, as well as increase the chances of animal sightings. However, a permit is first needed to be taken from the Forestry Department for that purpose. You must also have along with a guide provided by the Forest Department mandatorily. It should be noted here that the Wayanad Elephants Wildlife Sanctuary are more violent than their brothers in other Kerala sanctuaries.
Enjoy Birdwatching – Birding is a completely enjoyable experience at the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary given the number of species found here. Once again, care and caution must be taken while conducting a birdwatching trip.
